THE HOUSE SMELLED OF sawdust. When they climbed to the second story, Nash held a lantern up into a bedroom at the top of the stairs. “This room’ll be yours, Sunny Delight,” he said, the lantern light casting long shadows around the empty room. “When you visit, I mean.”

Sunshine stepped inside the room. The floorboards were wide and smooth, and two windows faced the side yard and another two the backyard. The bedroom was bigger than her room in the yellow house and there were no sea anemones on the walls, but she liked the smell of the sawdust and how she could feel it underneath the soles of her tennis shoes, like dirt from a forest floor.

Behind her, Nash had set down the lantern in the doorway and taken Aunt Lou into the hallway. He was describing something about the bathroom and Aunt Lou was saying, “Oh, sure, babe, I can picture it. Yes, yes, I can imagine.”
